On December 20, 2022, the Kitch Immigration Law Practice Group notified a long-time client that removal proceedings in Immigration Court were terminated, clearing the path for this client to finally become a permanent resident of the United States.

The client entered the United States over thirty years ago and retained Meghan Kennedy Riordan after his prior counsel could not effectively assist him. For over ten years, the client’s case before the Immigration Court has been “administratively closed,” allowing the client to remain in the United States with work authorization but always with a cloud of uncertainty about the future.

In early December 2022, a Motion to Re-Calendar Proceedings and a Motion to Terminate Removal Proceedings were concurrently filed by Jennifer Fahrenholt with the Immigration Court in Detroit. This 300+ page submission summarized over twenty years of prior court proceedings and over thirty years of the client’s previous efforts to obtain permanent resident status. It also detailed a path forward outside of Immigration Court, as the client was prima facie eligible to adjust status as the immediate relative of a U.S. citizen. Now, with a long-standing jurisdictional issue cured, the client can proceed with filing through U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services and will likely be a permanent resident before the end of 2023.
