Michael Shpiece serves of counsel to the firm in the Detroit office. He focuses on employee benefits, healthcare, insurance, and regulatory affairs.
Mr. Shpiece is an Adjunct Professor of Law at the Wayne State University Law School, teaching two employee benefits law courses. He has written law review articles and lectured in the areas of employee benefits, healthcare, and insurance. He is past Chair of the Employee Benefits Committee of the Tort, Trial & Insurance Practice Section of the American Bar Association and a past member of its Joint Committee on Employee Benefits.
He is on the Executive Committee of the Institute for Continuing Legal Education. He is a former Deputy Director of the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulation, has served as President of the Farmington Board of Education, and was President of the Friends of Child Abuse Prevention. He is also a member of the American Statistical Association and SCRIBES, The American Society of Writers on Legal Subjects.
Mr. Shpiece was named a Michigan Super Lawyer in 2010, 2011 and 2012. Only five percent of the attorneys in the state are named Super Lawyers.
He was recognized in DBusiness Magazine as a 2012 Top Lawyer.
Mr. Shpiece received his J.D., magna cum laude, from The University of Michigan Law School and his Ph.B., with high distinction, from Monteith College, Wayne State University. He has also done graduate course work in public administration, economics, statistics, and gerontology.
